Andrew Hall is the Sports Dietitian for the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club and the Brisbane Bullets Basketball Team. Andrew consults in a clinic based in Brisbane, he does work with Corporate Work Place Health and is also the Queensland Coordinator for Sports Dietetics Australia.

During the conversation we cover performance nutrition concepts around endurance sports.  Andrew touches on key concepts such as the availability of energy and why it matters, macro nutrients, fat, carbohydrates, proteins including the timing of ingesting these nutrients.  Why food quality is so important, strategies for negotiating race day, strategies for recovery. Andrew busts some popular myths around nutrition and Sports performance and we finish the conversation exploring the role that nutrition can have on injury management including recovery from being mobilised in a moon boot or a cast, recovery from concussion, bone stress injuries and the rehabilitation tendons.

Taylor McKeown is an Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games Medallist who lays claim to be Australia’s premiere female breaststroker. Having medalled in the 200m breaststroke at the Australian open champions consecutively since 2011. Taylor is also highly competitive in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley. Taylor picked up a silver medal in 2016 Rio Olympic Games in the 4x100m Medley swimming the breaststroke leg alongside her Australian team mates including Emily Seebohm, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell. In addition Taylor has picked up a Bronze Medal in the 2015 world swimming championships once again as a member of the 4x100m Medley Relay Team and Taylor pick up the Gold in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the 200m Breaststroke event.

During this episode Taylor shares her swimming highs, lows and learnings to date. There’s some great takeaways in this episode and Taylor shares around what it means to be dig deep in recent times with her swimming as she heads towards Tokyo 2020 for her Father who in late 2018 was diagnosed with Brain cancer.

These guests could not be better profiled to share around this all important topic. Dr Paul Griffin - Sports Podiatrist, has a Sports Podiatry career spanning 20 years. Paul has provided services to the Perth Glory Football Club and the Western Australian Branch of the Australasian Podiatry Council. Paul’s, Bartold clinical colleague Simon Bartold likewise has a very impressive career. Across Simon’s career to date, Simon has been a consultant at the Australian Institute of Sport Cricket Academy, the British Cricket Academy and the Indian Cricket Team as well as a number of other National Sporting Teams. Simon was a Deputy Director of Podiatry Services at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 and then again chosen for Medical Teams at the 2004 and 2006 Olympic Games. Simon went on to attend his 4th Olympic Games in London in 2012, he’s been a Consultant Podiatrist to Port Power in the AFL and he’s been an editorial Board Member for the Journal of Science and medicine in Sport and the Australasian Physiotherapy Journal as well as being the review of the Australasian Journal of Podiatric Medicine and the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

During this episode, we discuss the modern running shoe.  How the features of the modern running shoe came about, does running shoe segmentation or categorisation have a place in today’s running shoe landscape, reducing injury and preventing injury through running footwear. The role of maximalist and minimalist footwear, knowing when to replace your current running shoe, knowing whether to trial another pair of running shoes and of course selecting the best shoe for you. We discuss contemporary trends in running shoe manufacturing and the very exciting future of what the running shoe market holds.

Stewart McSweyn is an athlete on the rise, he is a Melbourne Track Club Athlete under the tutelage of Nic Bideau. Stewart is a dual Australian 10,000m Track Champion having won back to back Zatopek classics. He recently became the second fastest Australian ever across the 5000m distance clocking a remarkable 13:05:23 in a race which actually saw the four fastest 5000m runa in history. Just prior to this recording with Stewart McSweyn, Stewy Mac as he is affectionately known set the Australian indoor 1500m record with a blistering 3:35:10 at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix meet where he finished third in the Stellar Field. Stewy boasts PB’s of 28:03 on the road for 10k’s and 27:50 for 10,000m on the track. Stewy was an Australian Representative at the World Cross Country Championships and also in 2018 at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast where Stewy finished 5th in the 5000m and 11th in the 10000m.
