Dr Richard Blagrove is a strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, researcher and author of Strength and Conditioning for Endurance Running.

In 2017 Richard and his research team published a landmark systematic review which explored the effects of strength training on the physiological determinants of middle and long-distance running performance.

Richard’s research interests lie in the use of strength-based exercise as a tool to improve the metabolic cost of running. Recently Richard has begun to investigate the consequences of low energy availability on physical performance and health biomarkers in endurance athletes.

In this episode we re-learn and revise around the how, what and scientific whys behind ‘why runners and endurance athletes need and will benefit from strength training’.

In this rewired episode, we focused discussions on the needs of the Master’s runner and explored the physiology, biomechanics, injury risk and rehabilitation of the Master’s running athlete.

Rich shares around why we slow down as we age, the principles that underpin the changes that we see, why our tendons tend to lose stiffness as we age, what happens to our calves as propulsive elements as we mature as runners. Why strength training is such a critical component of the ageing runners training program and how to structure strength training around the week’s running volume. Rich answers the age old question, is running bad for our knees? He explains why a fast walking pace can be correlated with great longevity in life and touches on the role of footwear and shoe selection for the ageing or master’s runner.

Jan began his sporting career with a 10-year stint in the German national swim team between 1990 - 2000, whilst simultaneously completing studies at Harvard University with a degree in Economics. He then ventured into the investment banking world, however, his true calling drew him back to the sporting arena to the world of Triathlon.

Between 2001 and 2004, Jan went on to achieve four ‘first out of the water’ titles at the Ironman Hawaii World Championships and in 2004 Jan set the world record Ironman swim time of 42:17 at Ironman Germany in Frankfurt. Jan continued to compete professionally in the global triathlon circuit until 2007 when he founded Sailfish. The company expanded internationally and continues to set global standards as one of the world's best Triathlon brands, amongst both professionals and amateurs.

In 2018, Jan was unsettled with missing the fastest KONA swim time by just 6 seconds in 2003, so he launched a two-year comeback to finally break the Ironman World Championship swim record. At the age of 43, 17 years after his first appearance at the Hawaii Ironman Jan swam a blistering 46:29, of which the record still stands today. Between 2015 and 2019, Jan ran the Triathlon Convention Europe and between 2016 and 2021 Jan managed Patrick Langer 2x Ironman World Triathlon Champion.
