Louis is the head coach of the Dutch Triathlon Federation where he coaches the National Dutch team and also some of the world's best triathletes including former featured guest Richard Murray of South Africa and Rachel Klamer of the Netherlands. Louis’ expertise is regularly sought out in assisting with the planet's best runners, including Kenenisa Bekele.

Louis bio also includes having been the former performance manager for UCI Professional Cycling Dutch team.  Individually Louis currently coaches world class cyclists including Robert Gesink, Team Jumbo–Visma currently completing the 2020 Tour de France, another star athlete from Louise coaching ranks includes female cycling sensation Annemiek van Vleuten two times world cycling Time Trial champion and former road world champion.

On this Coach's Corner Louis shares some fantastic concepts including; Why making mistakes can be valuable and useful in our athletic development, the key ingredients of a good coaching / athlete relationship, the prescription of exercise and work and why there's so much merit as Louis outlines in prescribing the feeling, the perception of effort verse relying purely on objective data such as pace or watts for example, there is some terrific tips that Louis shares around tapering and why the key ingredient is ensuring that the athlete feels good, and he's happy.

Over the years, there have been many mixed messages from drinking to thirst to avoiding dehydration at all costs through to making sure we are not too over hydrated and risking the ill effects of Hyponatremia. So how do we make sense of hydration science? That is our focus for this expert edition with Andy Blow sports scientist and founder of Precision Hydration.

Andy blow is the founder of Precision Hydration, a sports scientist who has co authored a number of scientific studies and books and he's worked at the elite level of performance throughout his career, including enjoying the role as team sport scientist for the Benetton and Renault Formula One racing teams and ongoing work with the Porsche Human Performance Centre. In addition, Andy himself is an accomplished triathlete having won an XTERRA World Title and boasting numerous top 10 Iron Man and 70.3 finishes to his former triathlon racing resume. Here is my conversation on all things hydration science with Andy blow.

Andy explores the history around hydration for performance. Drinking to thirst versus drinking to a schedule, what to do before we exercise, special considerations for hot environmental conditions, hydration needs relating to the length of an event sub 60 minutes right up to nine to 10 hours plus and the importance of understanding our own sweat rate and sweat concentration in trying to best look after our own hydration needs and therefore performance.

On this episode, we feature Rian Doris who is the co founder and the Chief Operating Officer at the Flow Research collective, an organisation he co founded along with New York Times bestselling author of “Stealing Fire and the Rise of Superman”, Steven Kotler.  

Rian holds an Honours in philosophy from the Trinity College, Dublin and is currently working through a Master's in Applied Neuroscience from King's College in London. During this episode, Rian shares around this concept of flow. We've all heard of it, but what does it actually mean? And is it possible to manipulate our environment to boost the likelihood of entering into that magical flow state. Rian shares around the characteristics of non ordinary states of consciousness, the concept of flow triggers, the neurobiology, neuro chemistry and neuro physiologically of what's happening when we are in a flow state, and why researchers have suggested that a 4% difference between challenge and skills is optimal for producing flow.

On this episode, we discuss with Dr Margo Mountjoy all about RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports).  Now the consequences of an athlete being in this state can include not only performance detriments but also health side effects.

In 2014, the International Olympic Committee led by today's featured expert Dr Margo Mountjoy, published a consensus statement entitled “Beyond the female athlete triad relative energy deficiency in sport”, and this paper explored the syndrome of RED-S being impaired physiology caused by relative energy deficiency resulting impairments was stated to include effects on metabolic right menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis and cardiovascular health with the key driving factor of this syndrome relative energy deficiency in sport being low energy availability.

During this episode Dr Margo Mountjoy shares around the origins of coining the phrase relative energy efficiency in sport as she worked with the IOC medical committee, we explore the signs and symptoms of RED-S for athletes. Dr Mountjoy outlines the incidence and prevalence of relative energy deficiency in sport amongst endurance athletes and athletes in general and the prevalence has been reported to be up to 60% amongst athletes in endurance events.  Dr Mountjoy outlines how to screen for RED-S, the treatment of RED-S once it's been identified, how to lose weight and stay in energy balance, returning to sport post pregnancy and of course there's the issuing of this week's physical challenge as well.

On this episode, Associate Professor Patrick Wilson PhD covers the often unsexy but so necessary world of how to navigate our athletes gut. Patrick recently authored a wonderful book that I feel has a place in every athlete's library, The Athletes Gut: the inside science of digestion, nutrition and stomach distress.

In this expert edition, Patrick explores gut physiology, gut anatomy, the remarkable trainability of our gut, gut issues and symptoms, what goes wrong and why, the influence of psychology of the athlete on gut function, hydration, fuelling to ensure energy requirements are met and the consequences of being low on energy availability, hydro gel technology with regards to carbohydrate absorption, FODMAPs, salt/sodium loading and ingestion while training and racing and so much more.

Patrick is an assistant professor of exercise science and directs the human performance laboratory at the Old Dominion University. He earned his PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Minnesota and completed postdoctoral training in sports nutrition at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Patrick has authored more than 40 scientific articles that span the disciplines of exercise science, sports nutrition, and health.

During this episode we feature Catriona Bisset who will share around her highs, lows and many learnings from her career to date. Catriona shares around dealing with athlete pressures, navigating this difficult time that we all find ourselves in, working through an eating disorder as an adolescent athlete, which ultimately combined with the pressures she was dealing with led to a 10 year hiatus from the sport. Upon her return, Catriona became the 2019 Australian 800m champion.

Catriona shares around the concept of being the CEO of our own bodies, the importance of strength and conditioning for both performance optimisation and also injury prevention and rehabilitation, overcoming pre racing anxieties, switching our minds off when we race, the concept of treating our bodies with kindness. Dr Amit Mistry is a Clinical Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Medicine, he is the Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Sport & Exercise Special Interest Group and he is a Clinical Sport and Exercise Psychiatrist from the UK.

Dr Mistry is the co-author of a recently released book, “Case Studies in Sports Psychiatry”, which is a must for anyone working in the field of sport and exercise.  Dr Mistry shares many learnings pertinent to every athlete, every coach, every health and sport practitioner. 

Topics explored include: 

  • Exercise Addiction – What is it and how is it differentiated from a healthy undertaking of sporting activity. When Dr Mistry shared the characteristics of exercise addiction, I’ll put my hand up and say I ticked most of the boxes.
  • What is the Role of Perfectionism in Sport – when is it helpful and when does it become problematic or potentially maladaptive.
  • Depression and anxiety in athletes, what are the warning signs and what are the ways these conditions can be best treated and stewarded.

James Fletcher has worked with some of the planet's leading athletes across a multitude of sports in helping them bring science to their breath and boost performance through respiratory or specifically in Inspiratory muscle training. Arild Tveiten is the Triathlon Norway Head Coach, Sports director of the Norwegian Triathlon Federation, knows the endurance training world, along with the fundamentals that underpin endurance sporting success.

In recent years as reflected by the clean sweep in 2018 by the Norwegian Triathlon men, Norway has really positioned itself as such a strong force in the world of Triathlon and endurance sporting community. Kristian Blummenfelt, former featured performer of the show episode 117, in fact holds the fastest time ever recorded 70.3 triathlon with a sweltering 329:04 set in 2019.

During this episode Arild shares around his three guiding endurance training principles and they are why training at high volume is required for endurance sporting success paying attention to the density distribution of that training workload and recovering well are the key.

Chris Bramah is a UK-based Physiotherapist and Running Researcher who has worked and provided services for British Athletics and Team GB. Chris has completed his PhD investigating the biomechanics of running related injuries and biomechanical differences between elite and recreational runners.

Chris has published many peer reviewed articles and in addition to his consultancy and research based work, also provides gait analysis services and run service levels through his clinic at the University of Salford Manchester.

Dr Ebonie Rio is a post doc researcher at La Trobe University having completed her PhD in tendon pain. Ebonie holds a Masters of Sports Physiotherapy and her clinical career has included comprehensive work at the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Ballet Company, Australian Ballet School and currently the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Ebonie’s Physiotherapy experiences has included the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Paralympics. In addition, Ebonie spent 18 months travelling with Disney's The Lion King stage show and on this annual exploration on all things tendinopathy rehabilitation, we explore the all important role that re-training the brain has in achieving good outcomes for sore and aggravated tendons.

Ebonie shares around the difference between tendinopathy and tendonitis and why terminology matters. The limitations of imaging and practitioners' words in how they can set the trajectory for patients and athletes expectations, why it's necessary to be strong and symmetrical in order to work on strength and conditioning in an isolated manner. Ebonie touches on why form matters when it comes to key exercises such as calf raises and how to navigate practically the ups and downs that are a-given for the tendinopathy rehabilitation process.

Abdi Abdirahman's running bio is quite remarkable. After moving to the USA at age twelve from Somalia, Abdi went on to discover his running talent after impressing a US Coach following what was Abdi’s longest run in a pair of jeans. Following a Nike sponsorship Abdi’s career soared. It spanned 4 Olympic Games and in February 2020 Abdi at 43 years of age, he became the US’s oldest mature Olympian where he snagged 3rd place just behind episode 209 featured performer Jake Riley at the US Marathon Olympic Trials.

Michael Klim, a triple Australian Olympian became a six-times Olympic medallist securing the gold medals alongside Australian swimming teammates in the 4x200m and 4x100m freestyle events at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Michael also secured  two silver medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, a further silver in a 4x200m freestyle relay in Athens and at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. Michael and his teammates picked up the Bronze Medal in the 4X 100m medley relay.

In addition to all this Olympic success Michael also set world records, a 100m Butterfly, a 100m Freestyle and he was named the Male Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine in 1997.

Jonny Brownlee is the Olympic Games Triathlon Silver Medallist and the London Olympic Games 2012 Triathlon Bronze Medallist.  Jonny was the World Triathlon Series Champion in 2012, Silver Medallist in the World Championship in 2013 and 2016, Commonwealth Games Silver Medallists in 2014, Former u23 World Triathlon Champion in 2010 and staggeringly from July 2010 to May 2014 Jonny finished on a podium in every race he entered which was 42 races in a row.

Jonny is the younger brother of the Brownlee brothers; the brothers are not just triathlon history makers but world sport history makers. In 2012 Jonny and his elder brother Alistair became the first brothers together on a podium for an individual Sport at the Olympic Games since 1908 and then again in 2016 Jonny and Alistair became the First British Brothers to ever win first and second in an individual event at the Olympic Games. Then at the World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Cozumel in 2016, the sports world witnessed one of the great sporting gestures, when older brother Alistair stopped to help heat-illness stricken Jonny across the finish line and some have said that this helped to restore faith in modern sport.

In part 1 of this conversation, Jonny shares round how Alistair First Great British triathlon kit inspired him into the sport while Jonny’s schoolmates thought that Triathlon involved running a horse. Jonny reflects on his London and Rio Olympic Games successes, outlines the importance of staying relaxed and yes we discuss the Cozumel heat illness episode and the learnings Jonny has taken from it.

Professor Peter Reaburn dives deep into the science and the practicalities of maximising not only the health but the performance of the Master’s Athlete.  Professor Peter Reaburn is the Head of Program at Bond University's Institute of Sport and Health on the Gold Coast, Australia. Professor Peter Reaburn currently supervises five Phd projects related to both the applied sport science and health and performance and recovery of master’s athletes. He is currently on the editorial pedal for the European review of aging and physical activity and was previously a member of the Exercise and Sports Science Australia's National University Course Accreditation Program. 

Peter himself is a highly accomplished Athlete. A former National Champion in surf lifesaving, a Master’s national Ironman Triathlon Champion, avid road cyclist, multi gold medallist at the Australian surf lifesaving Masters titles and record holder in the big swim in Sydney with three national records in Master’s Swimming.

During this episode we explore what is the definition of successful aging, what's behind the rise we see in prominent master’s athletic success, we explore the physiological changes that occur as we mature, we discuss some very interesting scientific findings that show that masters athletes physiologically recover at a similar rate to younger athletes however their perception is that they recover in a poorer fashion. We speak about protein synthesis rates, the role of strength training, thermal tolerance and heat adaptation along with the top mistakes that masters athletes are making and so much more.

Cam Brown is unlike any professional triathlete that I've ever witnessed racing. Cam’s bio is nothing short of spectacular, Cam started in the sport of triathlon in 1987 and in 2020 as we record this episode Cam continues to race professionally at the top end of Elite long course distance triathlon.

Cam competed in his first Ironman distance triathlon in 1997 and at the time of recording Cam has completed Circa 70 Ironman distance triathlons. Cam has won the New Zealand Ironman Triathlon championships 12 times.  Has been crowned the European ironman champion in Frankfurt, has two second place finishes at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships, two third place finishes at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. Has won the Cannes Ironman title, Metaman Ironman Distance Champion and the list goes on and on. Cam’s last New Zealand Ironman title in fact came at the age of 43 in 2016.

During this episode Cam shares some key concepts that kept him in the game. These include attitude to training, being consistent, listening to one's body, the importance of developing good running technique and how that impacts on running efficiency, strength conditioning, structuring training programs and of course we reflect on some of the early days in the world of Triathlon.  There's a whole lot of fun in this and a lot of learnings as well.  Here is Cam Brown, 12 times New Zealand Ironman Champion, sharing his career highs, lows and learnings.

On today's episode we cover the topic of training for heat acclimation featuring Dr Dan Plews. Dan Plews is an Applied Sport Scientist, Researcher, Coach and competitive Triathlete. As an applied Sports Scientist, Dan has worked closely with athletes who have won more than 25 World and Olympic titles in sports including rowing, kayak and triathlon. Dan was part of Rowing New Zealand's preparations for both 2012 and 2016 in Olympic Games as a Sports Scientist.

As a Researcher Dan has a PhD in Exercise Physiology with a particular interest in heart rate variability and 30 peer reviewed publications to his name. As a Coach, Dan has coached three professional Ironman Triathletes to sub 8 hour times including Terenzo Bozzone, Jan Van Berkel and Tim Van Berkel.  Recently Dan founded endureiq.com an online learning hub for anyone interested in optimal long course Triathlon performance and a third course to go live is all about heat training and acclimation.

During this episode we talk through all manners of how an athlete can prepare to race in the heat and reverse engineer training to ensure the best performance on the day. In 2016 at the Rio Olympic Games, Vicky Holland became the first British woman to ever win an Olympic Triathlon Medal, when she secured the Bronze Medal in a Sprint Finish with her compatriot and fellow UK based Triathlete, Non Stanford.  In addition to that Vicky is a 3x Commonwealth Games medallist and a Member of the Bahrain Endurance 13 Team.

One of the things that came out of this conversation with Jake and Zane Robertson is the dangers and frustrations of constantly being compared as identical twin brothers.  So the risk of adding fuel to the fire Jake and Zane Robertson’s PB’s are red-hot. Between them they boast oceanic records as follows: Jake 10km oceanic record 27:28, 10,000m 27:32, half marathon 59:57. Zane oceanic marathon record 2:08:19 and half marathon 59:47 and 10km 27:28.
