Ryan Hall is a Dual US Marathon Olympian who has competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games finishing in 10th place and also in the 2012 London Games where Ryan was forced to retire early from the race for the first time in his career at approx. 10 miles. Ryan’s best accolades are the outstanding US record he holds for the Half Marathon with a 59:43 in 2007 for the Houston Half Marathon, a record that still stands to this day. In 2011 in the Boston Marathon, Ryan achieved a 2:04:58 for the full marathon, he is still the only American Marathoner to go sub 2:05. In addition to Ryan’s phenomenal 20 year distance running career, Ryan is now also known as a Best Selling author if his recently release memoire: Run the Mile You’re In: Finding God in Every Step.

During this episode we touch on a lot more than Ryan’s running career, we certainly speak about the highs, the lows and the learnings, but Ryan also shares candidly around the process of adopting 4 Ethiopian Sisters several years ago. Ryan outlines how he went from a basketball loving teenager who had no interest in running to one day feeling inspired to run a 15 mile lap of his local lake. Ryan shares around why he thinks that eating a lot of bread the day before he ran 59:43 may have been so important, the concept of why happy feet make light feet, while listening to your body more than your watch can be so important in training. What it was like running 7 marathons in 7 countries in 7 days for the World Marathon Challenge and Ryan survives a Physical Performance Round.

In episode 137 of The Physical Performance Show I bring you a conversation that I had with featured performer Dan Smith - AUS Olympic Swimmer.  Dan’s story really is the epitome of the highs, lows and learnings of a sporting life.

During this episode, Dan vividly takes us through his meteoric rise as a very gifted junior swimmer through to the crashing lows of finding addiction. This episode discusses marijuana use, cocaine and an ice addiction along with the crashing effects this had on Dan’s talent, his family and friends.

Dan shares the lowest of lows in the drug world to then fulfilling his childhood dream of representing Australia at the Olympic Games. Dan did that in the Rio Olympic Games where he swam as the member of the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay Team, that was the team that was touted as the Gold Medal Favourites and the boys came home in Fourth Position.  Dan takes us through that, the disappointment of dealing with that, the pressures he felt and how that made him retract from swimming before once again finding his mojo looking towards Tokyo 2020.  This is a really deep interview, there is lots covered in here with Dan sharing around his highs and his very low lows and the learnings that he’s taking on his way to fulfilling his potential.

Matt Fox and his co-author Tait Hearps travelled to Kenya in 2017 in the lead up to Eliud Kipchoge attempting to break the world record in the 2017 edition of the Berlin Marathon, it didn’t happen due to bad weather in that particular race but fast forward one year later and the world record was obliterated. During this episode Matt Fox from Sweat Elite takes us behind the scenes on what it was like to train with Eliud Kipchoge’s squad. He also spent time training with 800m World Record Holder and Dual Olympic Games Champion, David Rudisha but it’s the experiences with Eliud Kipchoge’s Group that is the focus of this episode covering insights, mindset, dietary and what a training week looks like.
