As mentioned last week, approximately 10% of all sports medicine presentations relate to bone stress injuries. It’s hard not to know someone in your training circle who has incurred one whether it is a tibial or a shin based stress reaction, a thigh based femoral or a foot based stress reaction or fracture. It’s an important topic for all endurance athletes and to all athletes in general. Chris Johnson is a highly regarded and esteemed Physical Therapist based in Seattle, USA. Chris is an avid endurance triathlete, a two time Kona Hawaii Ironman qualifier and a Certified Triathlon Coach. Chris is also extensively published in medical literature and has a monthly column on Ironman. At the time of recording, Ellie had just been home 7 days from her debut World Championship, where Ellie clocked a wonderful PB of 31:18 in the Women's 10,000m finishing in 13th Place and running a Tokyo 2020 Australian Athletics Olympics qualifier in the process. In addition, Ellie is also a City to Surf Australia Winner and boasts PBs of 69:14 in the Half Marathon and 2:26 across the full marathon. Assoc Prof Patrick Weinrauch is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who exclusively manages hip joint disorders in adults. A significant proportion of Dr Weinrauch’s private practice is dedicated to the management of active people with hip disorders who wish to maintain high activity levels and function in both sporting and lifestyle recreational pursuits. Associate Professor Weinrauch is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. Dr Weinrauch is currently appointed as Deputy Editor at the International Journal of Advanced Joint Reconstruction, a Member of the Australian Arthroplasty Society, Australian Medical Association and Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr Weinrauch has been a competitive cyclist himself and on the eve of this recording, he was preparing to leave Australia for Switzerland to tackle the mighty Matterhorn. Episode 180 of The Physical Performance show features Australian Distance Running Star, Milly Clark.   

Milly’s running career spans a decade plus and Milly ran her first official marathon in 2015 in Amsterdam where she qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games representing Australia, this has lead to her running in the recent Gold Coast Marathon to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic games with 2:28:08.

Milly completed a Master's Degree in Nutrition from the University of Sydney and during this episode shares some fantastic insights around fuelling for marathons, the challenges with disordered eating amongst recreational competitors and Elite distance runners, we continue the conversation having started from several episodes to go around energy availability for endurance athletes.

Dr Trent Stellingwerff is an experienced researcher having published more than 40 peer reviewed scientific publications. Trent is currently on the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance along with the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Trent has co-authored 6 book chapters focusing on the role that nutrition can play in supporting elite athletes performance including a chapter on Nutrition for the endurance Athlete for the newest version for the IOC Sports Nutrition Encyclopedia.

On this Expert Edition we take a deep dive into all things Foot orthosis or Orthotics. When it comes to foot orthosis it seems that everyone has an opinion, some people believe that everyone needs orthotics, others believe that no one needs orthotics. Some say that orthotics or orthosis weaken the foot, many maintained that orthosis re-align or reposition the skeleton and others believe that once you've got foot orthosis you have them for life. These are just some of the myths that we tackle and Ian Griffiths provides accurate information on this episode. We discuss the history of and definition of and mechanisms by which foot orthosis are known to have an effect. Ian shares an intriguing concept around foot orthosis as medication and Ian lays down a fun physical challenge.

Ian Griffiths is a foot, ankle and lower limb specialist. Ian is the Head of Podiatry at the prestigious pure Sports Medicine Practice in London. In addition Ian provides Sports Physiotherapy services to the PGA European tour, England Rugby Sevens, Surrey County Cricket Club and numerous football clubs and has provided services at the 2012 London Olympic games.  Ian maintains an active interest in research having published work in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, The Journal of Foot and Ankle Research and The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Ian also is a manuscript reviewer of the Civil Sport Injury in Physical Therapy Journals and Ian speaks internationally on all things Sports Podiatry. Furthermore Ian was awarded Fellowships for both the College of Podiatry in Podiatric Medicine and also the Faculty of Podiatry Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Braden Currie’s story starts with growing up on a farm in a small rural community in New Zealand. Dr Jo Lukins has a PhD as well as 25 years of Clinical Psychology experience. Dr Jo is the founding Sports Psychologist for the Australian Rugby League Team North Queensland Cowboys and the Townsville Fire Basketball Team. Dr Stephen Seiler is an American Sports Scientist who now resides in Norway. Stephen has been the past Dean of Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences at the University of Agder in Norway, a former Research and Senior Consultant for the Norwegian Olympic Federation and an Executive Board Member of Directus for the European College of Sports Science. Stephen is acclaimed worldwide amongst Coaches, Researchers, Athletes and Health Professionals for his work into Optimising Endurance Training. Stephen is perhaps best known for his work on Polarised Training. Over 2 decades of Research, Stephen and his team discovered that most endurance athletes spent the majority of their training time at very low intensities. And intensity Stephen claims as Zone 1. The majority of the remaining training time is spent at High Intensity or Zone 3 and quite surprisingly, the world’s best endurance athletes, Cyclists, Rowers, Cross Country Skiers and Distant Runners may spend only 4% at threshold level. Yet as recreational athletes, myself included it is so tempting to feel like we need to make our training sessions harder than likely what is required. And it is this training intensity distribution that has become popularised largely by Dr. Stephen Seiler and known worldwide as the Polarised Training Method. In other terms it has been referred to as 80:20 Training.

Neil Meigh graduated as a mature age student in 2012 from Bond University on the Gold Coast with a Bachelor of Exercise Science and a Doctor of Physiotherapy. Neil was first introduced to Kettlebell Hardstyle Training towards the end of 2012 where he then went on to complete the RKC Instructor Training Course. Neil has been strength training since 1991, he is a Certified Personal Trainer and he has been using Kettlebells exclusively for more than 6 years in his work as a Physiotherapist and now a Researcher.

Neil’s professional focus is on Healthcare, not sick-care and Neil believes in the maxim that prevention is better than cure. On this episode of The Physical Performance Show, we feature Zane Robertson ahead of his debut marathon performance in the 2019 Gold Coast Marathon. Zane Robertson debuted with an impressive 2:08:19 just an average of 3:02 per kilometre to set a new New Zealand Marathon record. Zane took 3rd place in the 2019 edition of the Gold Coast Marathon and this added to his record list. Zane’s other records include the Oceanic Record for the half marathon running a swift 59:47, the 10km road Oceanic Record of 27:28. Zane has also been a Dual World Championships Finalist, a 2016 Rio Olympic Games 10,000m track finalist. Zane was also the 2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist in the 5000m at Glasgow.

But what makes Zane Robertson’s success so unique is not just his remarkable results but the story that underpins how Zane Robertson has achieved what he has. Zane and his identical twin brother Jake at just 17 year old laid it all on the line. By moving to East Africa in Kenya 13 years ago in order to become the best runners they possibly could. They moved to East Africa to train with the best distance runners on the planet.

During today’s episode you will hear Zane share around some of the hardships that he endured as a Junior Runner. The bullying at school growing up, classmates and also even teachers. The studying that he and Jake did to learn and understand what it would take to be a world class runner. The pressures of being an unsponsored athlete including at the time of recording. The heartache that comes with injury including 2 sacral stress fractures that cost Zane a 2018 Marathon Debut at the Commonwealth Games. The emotions and feelings Zane was experiencing in the lead up to his Marathon Debut at the Gold Coast Marathon. Glynis Nunn has had a long and distinguished sporting career which spans more than 30 years as an Athlete, Coach and Administrator. After Glynis’s Dual Heptathlon Gold Medals at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games followed by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Glynis was granted the Medal of The Order of Australia. Glynis is a qualified Secondary Physical Education and English Teacher and a Level 5 Track and Field Coach. Glynis has trained Athletes for the World Youth and Junior Games, The Commonwealth Games, World Championships and The Olympic Games. She currently serves as the Director of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport and also as the Executive Director for the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association.

Jared Powell is a Gold Coast based Physiotherapist who is currently completing his PhD in shoulder pain at Bond University, where he is also a visiting lecturer and tutor. Shoulder pain is an enormous burn in society with half of the population experiencing shoulder pain in any given calendar year. It’s the third most common complaint that general practitioners hear from their patients and for those who have suffered from shoulder pain you know what an impact it can have on your daily function and your overall well-being.

Specifically, on this episode, Jared and I dived deep into Rotator Cuff Pathology and Frozen Shoulder. Jared shares some evidence-based guidelines on the management of these common conditions. He explores the role of surgery for shoulder pain and also the role of injectables in the treatment and management of shoulder conditions. Ryan Sandes won the coveted 100m Western States Endurance Run in 2017. This was 5 years after Ryan incidentally made his debut in that event in 2012 where he finished runner up, prior to that the 2012 Western States Endurance Run debut.  Ryan has taken out the coveted titles of the Leadville Trail 100miler in 2011, had taken victory in the Sahara Desert Race in 2008, the Gobi March in 2008, he came second in 2009 Racing The Planet Namibia Dessert Challenge and was the Winner of the Jungle Ultra Marathon held in Brazil in which he set a new course record. In 2010 Ryan became the first competitor to have won all four of the coveted Desert Trail Races, each a 6-7 day 250km self-supported foot race.

In addition to this in 2008 Ryan and trail running partner Ryno Griesel set a new fastest known time across the great Himalaya trail covering an astonishing 1504km in 24 days, 4 hours and 24 minutes. In 2016 Ryan launched his autobiography TrailBlazer which has become a worldwide success. People are not only inspired by Ryan’s athletic ability but also his humble and down to earth approach to life. Ryan is a Father and a dedicated family man and on the time of recording was on the doorstep of 2019 Western States Endurance 100m campaign.

During this episode Ryan shares the highs, lows and learnings in his trail running, where his interest in trail running started, how staying positive has helped him, becoming a Dad, competing in the Western States Endurance Run and so much more.

Meb Keflezighi is the only runner in history to have won a New York Marathon Title, Boston Marathon Title and Olympic Marathon Medal. In 2004, Meb won a Silver Medal in 2004 Athens Olympic Marathon as well as running at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Marathons. Meb featured in the 10,000m at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He was the American Record Holder for the 10,000m, running an incredible 27:13 PB across the distance. Meb has PB’s of 13:11 for 5,000m right through to his marathon PB of 2:08:37 set at the 2014 Boston Marathon just a few weeks shy of his 39th birthday. Meb’s career has been hallmarked by longevity. Meb competed in 26 Professional Marathons and he just released a book of that name 26 Marathons which is a behind the scenes look at the highs and the lows of each of those Marathons.

Meb has a total of 5 World Major Medals, has been the 3x National Cross Country Champion for America, has won a coveted 4x NCAA Championships, is the Founder of Meb Foundation which aims to maintain balance and be a positive lifestyle choice education tool for school kids, He has authored 5 books, 26 Marathons, Eat Like a Champion, How to Run, Run to overcome and Meb for Models. Joseph Coyne is an exercise physiologist, sports scientist and performance coach.  Joseph has been the Physical Preparation Coach for the Chinese Athletics Association, Jump and Sprint Athletes. He then went on to be the Performance Manager for the Chinese Olympic Committees National Sports Training Centre in the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Joseph is currently completing a PhD at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas and Joseph has been sort out by individual athletes including some of Australia’s rugby league players and also surfers. Jules McConnel is a champion sky diver and has amassed an incredible 10,500 jumps in her career. Through her key professional years jumping up to 900 times per year. In 2012 Jules joined up with her jumping partner Michael Vaughan to set an Australasian record of 300 jumps in a day. Jules specialises in canopy formation jumping and has been many times over the Australian representative of the world skydiving championships and at the time of recording was preparing for the upcoming World Championships to be held in Siberia.

During this episode Jules touches on the need to fight complacency in all that we do, remaining focused, the importance of listening to coaches, respecting those that have gone before us and Jules outlines the darkest day in her professional career, that of losing her jumping partner in a fatal accident, Michael Vaughan in 2015. Hayden Wilde is a New Zealand Professional Triathlete chasing selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Hayden is a much loved figure throughout the Super League Triathlon series where I met him personally.  Recently in the World Triathlon series he has really stood out particularly with the season opener for the 2019 season in Abu Dhabi where Hayden led a great charge to lead the race 3 quarters into the run. What makes Hayden’s burgeoning success so amazing is that he’s only been competing in the sport of Triathlon for a few short years having come from an XTERRA / offroad background where in the under 19 category Hayden picked up a double world championship.

Hayden has a nickname the Maltese Falcon and is one of the happiest go lucky guys on the circuit of world triathlon. But behind the charm and the smiles Hayden has endured real personal hardships which he touches on during this episode sharing the tragic death of his father where he was just a young man and the subsequent impact that had on Hayden. We touch on the highs and the lows and of course the learnings and we were privileged to have Hayden’s coach Craig Kirkwood join us during the time of the recording. Craig himself is a Commonwealth Games, Distance Runner from New Zealand who shared some great coaching insights.

Dr. Peter Malliaras is an Associate Professor at Monash University where Peter leads various research Tendinopathy projects and supervises PHD students. Peter is also a practicing clinician at Complete Sports Care in Hawthorne, Melbourne where he consults with patients who have had enduring persistent tendinopathy injuries along with elite athletes.
