On this bonus episode we are showcasing the grit and willpower of two of our Australian athletics team members Genevieve Gregson Nee LaCaze and Patrick Tiernan.

Most of us will have seen both of these athletes endure Olympic performances that they did not expect with Genevieve Gregson on the final water hurdle of the 3000m steeplechase succumbing to a ruptured Achilles. It was heartbreaking for everyone watching, later that evening, as Gen sat in the medical room with a splint on her leg she posted to social media “I'm heartbroken and don't have the words right now to respond to you all, but in short, Ruptured Achilles on the last water jump Happy Birthday me, thank you for the support and messages I'll try to respond in time for now I need to mend my heart, soul and achilles”. At the time of our catchup, Gen was just several days post achilles tendon repair, in managed isolation and quarantine and the emotions are still very raw.

In addition on this bonus episode, you'll hear from Aussie hero, Patrick Teirnan, with just 150m left to run in the men's 10,000m track final, fell valiantly, picking himself up several times to get across that finish line. The fall was out of absolute exhaustion with possible effects from the heat. You'll hear Pat outline how the 10,000m race has been one of great highs and great lows. Pat was in hotel quarantine in Brisbane, he reflects on the disappointment of getting so close to what would have been a career best performance with a certain top 10 finish in the 10,000m final before things didn't go to plan.

Professor Stu embarked on a Post Doctorate at the Australian Institute of Sport and Indiana University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, following graduation from the University of Melbourne with a Physiotherapy Degree in 2001. Professor Warden's research interests focus on the form and function of the musculoskeletal system, in-particular the lifelong contribution of physical activity to skeletal health. Professor Stu has contributed to over 170 peer reviewed publications and currently serves as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy and also as an Editorial Board Member for Bone, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

Professor Stuart Warden alongside colleagues Brent Edwards and Dr Rich Willy released a landmark commentary by way of a scientific paper titled "Preventing Bone Stress Injuries in Runners with Optimal Workload". It was published in February 2021 and it's a must read for any Coach, Athlete or Practitioner working in the field of endurance sports.

In this episode we dive deep into its contents:

  • What the author's mean by bone workload
  • Optimal workload to induce skeletal adaptation
  • The fact that not all athletes have good skeletons
  • Why it is that distance running does not build good bones
  • How we can use periodisation to help build more bone
  • The effects of early specialisation with sport and the contribution to bone stress injury risk
  • Why it is that optimising bone structure is critical and how it only develops before puberty
  • How it is that we can positively affect our bone density and bone architecture through loading with multiple direction jumps and why it is only during puberty that this is possible
  • How we can positively increase the robustness of our skeleton through bone centric exercises
  • How we can try and minimise training errors to avoid the onset of a bone stress injury, a stress fracture a stress reaction or similar

Amy shares around how we can optimise our skeletal or bone health across our lifespan, what can we do pre puberty, what can we do as adults and what can we do post menopause and as Amy states MANopause for the blokes in order to ensure we have optimal skeletal health in lower likelihood or mobility associated with low bone density or poor bone health such as osteopenia or osteoporosis.

Amy works alongside former featured expert of the show Professor Belinda Beck. Amy has outputted greater than 20 publications in her burgeoning research career. In one landmark study, which she co collaborated with her Griffith University Research colleagues, Professor Belinda Beck and Associate Professor Ben Weeks was called the LIFTMOR M trial, this trial explored the effects of supervised high intensity resistance and impact training on the bone geometry and strength in middle aged and older men with low bone mass. Amy and her research team at Griffith University Men's Health Institute discovered a real dearth in the literature around the role of exercise in helping men with low bone mass post MANopause.

Amy outlines the role that exercise plays in terms of adapting our skeletons, the keys in optimizing our skeletal health pre puberty, why it's important to look at maintaining maximising bone health as an adult and then ways that we can fight the decline post menopause or MANopause in terms of our bone health. Amy shares why high intensity low repetition exercise is so important and why high repetition low resistance exercise doesn't produce the same positive results on bone adaptation. Amy encourages us that it is never too late to improve our bone health.

Max Paquette is an incredibly accomplished academic as well as Applied Scientist. Max is currently the Associate Professor of the Human Performance Centre at the University of Memphis and the Director of the Musculoskeletal Analysis Laboratory. Max's primary research interests have focused on the effects of different footwear, fatigue repetition, altered techniques and training interventions for injury prevention and performance improvement for runners. Dr Paquette has published over 60 scientific papers and consults for high schools, collegiate and world class track and field athletes and their coaches to optimize performance and reduce injury risks. It isn't just a scientific experience that has been accrued across the years, there's also that very practical application. In addition to the many hats that Max wears, Max also coaches his professional, middle distance running wife, Lauren.

During today's conversation, which we’re terming “Moving Beyond Weekly Distance”, Max Paquette shares around a commentary that he and co collaborators published in 2020, titled “Moving Beyond Weekly Distance”: Optimizing Quantification of Training Load in Runners”, and the premise of the commentary was challenging the convention of quantifying running training loads solely around mileage. This is a crucial conversation around getting the most out of your training, trying to avoid training errors and optimising your recovery and adaptation to the work that you've done. Of course, Max lays down a great physical challenge for the week and distils all of his learnings into one piece of advice as per usual.

In episode 263 of The Physical Performance Show Brad Beer shares the learnings from our Expert Editions that we've shared to date in 2021.

It's been said that repetition is the mother of all learning, and with so many great learnings coming through 2021, we thought it would be great for our learnings as people try to pursue and perform our own physical best if we didn't gloss over some of the firehose learnings that come out each and every week. But instead at least once a quarter we purposed revision of the key learnings shared to date.

As we look back on this year's expert additions and the highlights around some of the topics shared and the conversation starters that emerged, we're kicking off with Episode 252 that featured expert Rory Darkins, Psychology Researcher and Mental Skills Coach, an episode that we dubbed Positive Psychology for the Endurance Athlete. One of the things that really struck a chord for listeners was the difference between harmonious and obsessive passion, how to avoid our own sporting pursuits and physical performance pursuits consuming us and becoming an obsessive type passion, which can have some pitfalls.

Jess has a great story as BBC Sport published in 2020 “Jess Learmonth: From supermarket worker to Olympic medal hopeful” in 2019 Jess and British compatriot Georgia Taylor-Brown took line honours in the 2019 Tokyo Olympic Triathlon test event, however, were controversially disqualified under a technicality when they cross the line hand in hand.  That performance amongst many others, really puts Jess in the medal mix for Tokyo 2021 the Olympic Games.

Jess burst onto the elite triathlon scene in 2016, with a first European Cup win, before going on to finish in the Top 10 at the World Triathlon series Leeds event a few months later in front of her hometown fans. Jess collected the silver medal in the overall World Triathlon series rankings for 2019, collected silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held here on the Gold Coast and also silver in the mix teams relay with Great Britain and having recently been named in the Great British team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. Jess is a name in the sport to certainly watch.

Jess is quite the character so I know you're going to really enjoy the highs, lows and career learnings from Jess Learmonth on this featured performer episode.
